About this work
Dark clusters of pine and slender birch trunks frame both sides of the composition, opening onto a wide view of rolling green hills fading into mist. Faint white rooftops of a small settlement are visible in the pale haze at the base of the slopes, under a heavily clouded sky.
Soft, blended strokes of grey, blue and muted green describe the misty distance, while the framing trees are painted with darker, more defined greens and browns. The gradual dissolving of the far hills into pale grey light gives the scene a hushed, damp early-morning atmosphere.
