About this work

Two tall, narrow tree trunks rise through the centre of the composition, their bright green foliage spreading overhead and partly screening a pale mint-green house wall with a shuttered window behind. A low stone wall crosses the foreground, with smaller shrubs and a terracotta pot tucked against it, and a strip of paved road visible at the very bottom edge.

The scene is built with thick, visible strokes of impasto - dabs of yellow-green and darker olive for the leaves, warm ochre and brown for the trunks, and cool mint and white for the wall behind. Strong sunlight picks out the stone of the wall and the crown of the foliage, creating patches of bright highlight among deeper shadow. The handling is loose and textured throughout, giving the small courtyard view a fresh, sunlit warmth.
