About this work
A cluster of pale green and yellowish apples, several blushed with pink, lies scattered across a grassy ground viewed from almost directly above. The fruit is grouped loosely toward the center and lower half of the canvas, with a few outliers drifting to the edges, each casting its own small shadow.
Dry, hatched brushstrokes of ochre, olive and violet build up the sunlit grass, while the apples themselves are modeled with softer, rounded strokes of pale green and cream highlights. Dappled light breaks across the whole surface in overlapping patches, giving the still life a bright, calm, late-summer stillness.
