About this work
Pots of red geraniums and white blossoms crowd the corner of a sunlit terrace, set against a heavy stone pillar and a white cloth draped like a curtain. Beyond the terrace wall a narrow alley of ochre and pink houses climbs toward a domed bell tower, with laundry strung between the buildings and small arched windows piercing the facades.
Built with thick, textured strokes and knife work, the palette shifts from the warm reds and greens of the flowers to cool violet-grey shadows on the stonework and lavender sky. Strong sunlight rakes across the terrace, sharpening the contrast between the shaded foreground and the glowing town beyond, giving the scene a bright, southern warmth.
