About this work
The towers, spire and flying buttresses of a Gothic cathedral rise above rooftops and trees on the far bank of a river. A low stone bridge with several arches crosses the water, dotted with tiny figures of pedestrians and topped with red accents. In the foreground, a leafy tree shades a paved quay where strollers walk and a passenger boat is moored below the embankment wall.
Bright blue sky and strong sunlight pick out the cathedral's pale stone against deep green foliage and the turquoise river. Quick, dabbed brushwork renders the crowd, boats and reflections with loose, sketchy touches typical of plein-air painting. The clear light and lively activity give the view an energetic, sunlit charm.
