About this work
A tall, tapering obelisk rises from a marble elephant sculpture at the center of a small square, flanked by tall buildings in warm orange and rust tones on either side. Behind, a rounded church apse closes the view, with small figures gathered near the base of the monument and along the pavement.
Saturated oranges and ochres on the flanking facades play against the pale stone of the obelisk and elephant, under a clear violet-blue sky. Bold, confident brushwork blocks in the architecture with visible strokes, giving the composition a bright, animated, sun-warmed energy.
