About this work
A steep, narrow street rises between tall ochre and cream buildings toward a brick bell tower silhouetted against a cloudy sky. Wrought-iron balconies, hanging lanterns, potted trees and red geraniums line the walls, while pale yellow flags and pennants hang overhead. Small figures, including a woman in a blue top and a child in pink, walk down the sunlit cobbled lane.
Warm ochre and cream walls are built with loose, confident strokes and dragged highlights, contrasted against a soft grey-white sky rendered in broken, cloudy brushwork. Touches of red, green and turquoise punctuate the muted architecture, and quick, economical marks stand in for the distant figures. The loose handling and warm light give the scene an animated, sunlit charm.
