About this work
A café terrace built out over the water is shaded by a wooden pergola, with figures seated at tables along the rail. Beyond the terrace the bay opens onto a calm turquoise sea dotted with two small islets carrying clustered buildings and cypress trees, and steep mountains rise behind, their slopes wrapped in a pale haze.
Cool blue-greens and violet-grays dominate, warmed by the ochre stone of the terrace and touches of red at the tables. The paint is applied in broad, rapid strokes with the canvas left visible in places, giving the mountains a soft, atmospheric blur while the terrace and figures stay more loosely defined. The mood is bright and leisurely, a sunlit coastal impression.
