About this work
Black gondolas moor along a stone quay in the foreground, prows reflected in bright turquoise lagoon water. To the right, the pink-and-white patterned wall and arcaded loggia of the Doge's Palace rise beside a column and lamp posts, with small figures strolling the pavement; across the water, a domed basilica floats in haze.
Clear blues and vivid turquoise dominate the water and sky, set against the warm cream and rose of the palace stone. Loose, sketchy strokes render the crowd and gondolas as quick notes of color, while the architecture keeps crisper, more deliberate lines, giving the view a bright, breezy clarity.
