About this work
A white neoclassical palace with a colonnaded portico and pediment rises behind a screen of autumn trees. Bare-branched and orange-leaved trees frame the composition on both sides, with a paved path curving from the foreground lawn toward the building's entrance. Patches of grass, fallen leaves and a low garden wall fill the lower half of the scene.
Thick, textured strokes of orange, rust and gold render the foliage against a clear blue sky and the palace's cool white stone. Strong sunlight casts sharp shadows across the columns and pathway, giving the scene bright, saturated contrast. The heavy impasto and bold color give the autumn day an energetic warmth.
