About this work
A line of small boats rests along a riverbank thick with autumn undergrowth, beneath tall trees whose foliage has turned deep orange, red and gold. Across the water, a row of pastel houses with columned porticoes and a distant bridge complete the far shore, all mirrored faintly in the river's surface.
Warm oranges and rusty reds dominate the foreground, played against a cooler blue-grey sky and green-tinted water reflections. Vigorous, broken brushstrokes and heavy impasto build up the autumn foliage and reflections, giving the view a rich, vibrant intensity typical of a bright autumn afternoon.
