About this work
The composition is filled edge to edge with a dense garden bed of pansies in deep red, purple, violet and yellow, interspersed with tall spikes of pink foxglove and a few orange blooms, all set among layers of bright green leaves. No sky or horizon appears, only the tangle of blossoms and foliage.
Painted in oil with thick, loaded brushstrokes and rapid, textured touches of pure color, the palette is saturated and high-contrast, greens and reds pushed to full intensity. The dense massing of color and light dappling through the leaves give the picture an energetic, sun-drenched vibrancy.
