About this work
A single wooden boat is beached at the water's edge, hull tilted toward the viewer, bow pointing into thick green undergrowth and overhanging branches. Warm shallow water spreads across the foreground, dappled with light and broken reflections of the boat and greenery. A weathered wooden post or mooring stump stands at the boat's stern.
Built with thick, loaded strokes of a palette knife, the canvas contrasts cool blue-greens of foliage with warm ochre and pink tones of the boat and water. Sunlight is rendered through broken color rather than outline, giving the surface a shimmering, textured energy typical of plein-air impressionist technique. The effect is bright, warm and immediate.
