About this work
A wide canal recedes toward a gilded, star-patterned bell tower rising above a stone bridge and rooftops. Along the near embankment, framed by a leaning tree and iron railings, women in summer dresses and other passersby walk in dappled sunlight, while a moored boat and lamp posts line the quay.
Warm greens, ochres and creamy whites cover the buildings, set against a pale, cloud-streaked sky, with the water rendered in loose blue-grey strokes carrying reflections of the bridge. Thick, visible brushwork and strong cast shadows convey bright midsummer light and an unhurried, everyday city rhythm.
