About this work
Two ornate domes of the basilica, each topped with a cross on a gilded orb, dominate the upper composition against a clear deep-blue sky, with a smaller onion dome and campanile visible to the left. To the right, the diamond-patterned pink and cream facade of the Doge's Palace rises with its Gothic arcade of pointed arches, below which tiny figures stroll across the sunlit piazza, including what appears to be a market stall with an umbrella at lower left.
The palette is bright and warm, dominated by golden ochres, salmon pink and cream stonework set against a saturated blue sky. Brushwork is loose and confident, built from broad strokes that flatten architectural detail into patterns of light and shadow, giving a vivid, sunstruck impression of the square. The mood is buoyant and celebratory, capturing the heat and bustle of a Venetian summer day.
