About this work
A tree-lined embankment curves beside a wide canal, its stone parapet running toward a row of yellow and rose-colored townhouses reflected in the water. Autumn foliage overhangs the walkway on the right, where a single figure in a red coat walks away from the viewer past parked cars and bare patches of pavement. Low buildings and a bridge close the view in the distance.
Thick, confident strokes of ochre, gold and rust build up the autumn canopy, applied with a palette knife that leaves ridges of visible paint. The canal water is rendered in broken strokes of grey, mauve and pale blue, catching soft reflected light from an overcast sky. The handling is loose and textured throughout, giving the scene an energetic, plein-air immediacy.
