About this work

A triangular wedge of watermelon lies on a table beside a small glass jar holding red and orange flowers with dark green leaves. The arrangement sits low in the frame against an expanse of deep blue, wave-like background, with pale cream and pink cloth folds gathering at the lower edge.

Cool indigo and teal tones dominate the backdrop, set off by the watermelon's coral-red flesh and the flowers' hot red-orange petals. Paint is built up in thick, slashing strokes with a palette knife, leaving ridges of color that catch the light. The contrast of warm fruit and flowers against the cold blue ground creates a vivid, charged still life.
