About this work
Sliced watermelon wedges, deep red and glistening, are piled beside a whole cantaloupe and its cut segments, with dark blue-black grapes, golden pears, and split green figs scattered across a white tablecloth. A tall copper jug and a small dark pitcher stand behind the fruit, with leafy vine foliage filling the background.
The composition contrasts the cool white cloth and grey-green foliage with the hot reds of the watermelon and warm ochres of the pears and melon, all built up in loose, textured strokes. Reflected light glints off the copper vessel's curved surface, and dabs of white highlight the fruit skins and glass. The rich, saturated color and abundant fruit convey a warm, late-summer harvest mood.
