About this work
A weathered stone archway with decorative brick voussoirs and a small round window above frames a deep, narrow passageway. Through the arch, steps and shuttered houses recede into shadow, with a wall lantern mounted at the right of the opening. The thick masonry in the foreground dominates the composition, pushing the lit alley into the distance.
Warm ochres, creams, and terracotta in the arch contrast with cooler greys and greens glimpsed in the passage beyond, applied in dense, textured strokes that emphasize the roughness of old stone. The paint is built up unevenly, almost sculptural in places, catching light unevenly across the carved details. The framing creates a sense of quiet enclosure and inviting depth typical of a small Mediterranean street.
