About this work
Seen from a high vantage point, the composition looks down over a dense field of Parisian rooftops, chimney pots and a narrow street cutting diagonally through the middle ground. In the distance, the domes and bell tower of the Sacré-Cœur basilica rise pale above the rooftops, with a slender church spire visible further to the left.
A muted palette of greys, lavenders and soft ochres captures a hazy, overcast morning, with small dashes of warm terracotta marking the chimney pots scattered across the roofs. Brushwork is loose and broken throughout, dissolving architectural edges into atmosphere, while a few blossoms glimpsed at the lower corner add a single note of color to the otherwise cool, tranquil cityscape.
