About this work
Dense summer trees arch over a stone-edged canal that bends away toward a cluster of pink and cream buildings in the middle distance. A low balustrade runs along the near bank, where a small red-clad figure stands by the railing. The water fills most of the foreground, carrying broken reflections of foliage and facades beneath a patch of pale blue sky visible through the canopy.
Foliage is built from short, choppy strokes of yellow-green, olive and lime that let daylight flicker through the canopy. The canal surface is worked in overlapping dabs of turquoise, violet and cream, mirroring the buildings in fractured color rather than sharp detail. Warm and cool tones sit side by side throughout, giving the view a bright, breezy, sunlit feel typical of a quiet morning walk.
