About this work

The composition is dominated by a vast sky of drifting grey and white clouds parted by patches of blue, occupying nearly three-quarters of the canvas. Below, a low distant embankment with pale buildings and bare trees lines the far shore, while a small dark boat rests near the bank in the foreground, reflected in the still grey-green water of the Neva.

Broad, loaded strokes of white, blue-grey and ochre build the sky's shifting light, while the riverbank and buildings are suggested with a few economical dark accents. The wide horizontal format and airy, cloud-filled palette give the scene an open, breathing calm typical of a fresh spring day on the water.
