About this work
A low wooded island stretches across a wide river or lake, its dark green tree line the only solid form beneath an enormous sky. Soft grey-blue clouds pile up in heavy banks over three-quarters of the canvas, their undersides tinted with pale gold, while calm water below carries faint reflections and a few scattered ripples.
Paint is applied in thick, visible strokes, built up with a loaded brush or knife into ridges of white, grey and blue that read as billowing cloud. Muted blue-greens and lavender-greys unify sky and water, giving the scene a hushed, overcast calm typical of a plein-air river study.
