About this work

Viewed from a high vantage point, a wide frozen canal curves past rows of ochre, yellow and pink apartment buildings beneath a flat grey sky. In the foreground, snow-laden bare trees and a snowy rooftop frame a stone embankment where two figures in red walk along the balustrade.

The palette stays close to whites, greys and warm ochres, with the canal ice picking up faint blue-green reflections of the buildings. Loose, dry brushstrokes describe snow on branches and roofs, and the elevated, slightly compressed perspective gives the winter cityscape a hushed, bird's-eye stillness.
