About this work
The composition centers on a massive stone bridge with three arched openings crossing a calm river; through the central arches, reflections and glimpses of buildings across the water are visible. To the left, a slender church spire with pointed windows rises above rooftops and trees; foliage crowds the left edge and upper right corner.
Painted in loose, heavily textured strokes with a cool palette of grays, blues and greens accented by warm ochre in the stonework, the surface built up with visible impasto. Light is soft and diffused, giving the scene an airy, plein-air atmosphere typical of impressionist landscape painting.
