About this work

A quiet pond fills the middle of the composition, its surface dotted with clusters of lily pads and bordered by dense trees and shrubs. A weeping willow arches over the water from the center background, its trailing branches nearly touching the surface. Tall grasses and leafy plants crowd the foreground on the right, framing the view toward the water.

The scene is painted almost entirely in greens, from acid yellow-green in the sunlit water to deep olive and grey-green in the shadowed foliage. Light appears diffuse, filtering through the canopy rather than striking any single point directly. Thick, textured brushwork builds up the massed foliage, creating a dense, still, faintly humid atmosphere.
