About this work
A snow-mantled rocky outcrop dominates the left foreground while slender pine and birch trunks rise across the composition, opening onto a distant tree line under a low winter sun near the horizon. Patches of bare dark earth and rock show through the thick drifted snow, and the ground falls away toward a hazy frozen expanse beyond the trees.
Warm ochre and rose tones of the low sun glow near the horizon against a cool violet-grey sky, played off against the blues and whites of shadowed snow rendered in thick, confident impasto strokes. The contrast between warm sky and cold ground, built with loose, textured brushwork, gives the scene a hushed, tranquil winter stillness.
