About this work
A broad mountain valley opens beneath a pale, cloud-streaked sky, with ranges of blue peaks receding toward the horizon. A wooded slope frames the right side of the composition, while in the foreground a grassy meadow slopes down to a single herder in blue walking beside a small group of grazing cattle, with village rooftops tucked into the green middle distance.
Loose, textured brushwork builds the meadow grasses and pine boughs with quick dabs of yellow-green, ochre and dark green, while the receding mountains are rendered in softer, cooler blues that flatten into the misty sky. Warm morning light picks out the near foliage against the hazy distance, giving the view an airy, unhurried freshness.
