About this work
A stone balustrade and a row of tall lampposts run along a seaside embankment, curving toward cafe umbrellas and small buildings in the distance. Beyond the calm turquoise sea, layered, rounded hills rise against a pale, partly clouded sky, with a leafless tree branch framing the upper right corner.
Cool blues and greens dominate the sea and sky, set against the warm ochre and pink stonework of the balustrade underfoot. Loose, textured brushwork built up with a palette knife gives the hills and water a solid, weighty presence, while the empty promenade and soft daylight lend the view a calm, unhurried seaside stillness.
