View on Senna

A row of trees in yellow-green autumn foliage lines the near bank of a river, screening a group of buildings behind them, among which a domed structure rises above the rooftops. Two or three small boats are moored along the quay at the water's edge, their dark hulls reflected in the rippled surface below. A low bridge or covered walkway extends along the right edge of the view.

Cool blue-greens in the water play against the warmer ochre and yellow of the trees and stone facades, under a soft, pale grey-blue sky. The small scale is handled with quick, loaded strokes, dabs of yellow and green for foliage and thin dark lines for boat masts and rigging, giving the sketch an immediate, plein-air freshness. The compact composition and bright touches of color create a lively, sunlit impression of a riverside corner.
