About this work
A broad expanse of calm water occupies the lower half of the composition, narrowing as it recedes toward a dark band of trees along the horizon. A steep bank thick with dry golden grass and reeds rises along the right edge, while the pale, overcast sky fills the upper portion and is echoed in the water's soft reflections.
Muted greys and warm straw tones dominate, with the dark tree line grounding the composition against the pale sky and water. Loose, textured strokes render the grasses with flickers of ochre and rust, while smoother, blended passages describe the calm water and hazy distance, producing a hushed, still, wintry atmosphere.
