About this work
A line of slender trees with bright red-orange crowns stretches across the middle distance, their thin trunks reflected in a calm stretch of water below. Loose reeds or grasses in the same rust tones fill the foreground, while a pale strip of sky and hazy horizon opens between the trees at center.
The paint is applied in soft, dragged strokes and thin washes that let warm reds, ochres and browns bleed into a misty white ground, blurring hard edges between land, water and sky. Diffuse light and the absence of any sharp detail give the impressionistic scene a hushed, warm, tranquil atmosphere despite its high-key red palette.
