About this work
A weathered stone bridge with three low arches crosses a calm river, its reflection breaking across the water's surface. A pale house with a red-tiled roof stands at the left bank, backed by a densely wooded hillside, while flowering plants cluster in the foreground at right.
Built up with thick, textured strokes of ochre, olive, mauve and rust applied with a palette knife, the scene reads more through color patches than fine detail. Warm light bathes the buildings and foliage, and the loose, vigorous handling gives the tranquil river view an energetic, painterly atmosphere.
