About this work
A narrow waterway runs straight back through a corridor of bare, frost-whitened trees and shrubs crowding both banks, opening onto a pale, hazy sky at the vanishing point. The still water fills the lower half of the canvas, mirroring the trees and sky in soft, elongated reflections, with a small pale mark at the water's edge in the lower left corner.
Rendered in close-toned greys, silvery whites, and soft browns, the picture builds its winter atmosphere through diffused, almost breathless light rather than sharp detail. Loose, dry brushwork stipples the branches into a frosted haze, while the water is laid in smoother, wetter strokes, giving the whole scene a hushed, contemplative stillness.
