About this work
A broad expanse of river fills most of the canvas, its rippled surface rendered in long horizontal strokes of blue-grey and lavender. Two white gulls wheel low over the water, and a small boat with a red sail crosses the current. On the far shore, trees, a colonnaded building and a gilded cathedral dome sit beneath a pale, cloud-streaked sky.
Cool blues and violets dominate the water, broken by a warm ochre-gold band of reflected light down the center and browns along the near bank. The brushwork is loose and gestural, built from long dragged strokes that capture the movement of the surface, giving the scene a bright, airy, sun-filled calm.
