About this work
A long stone bridge of many arches spans a slow river beneath a glowing sky, with the sun's disc sitting just above the water. Silhouetted domes and rooftops of a distant city line the horizon on the left, while dark trees and foliage frame the riverbank on the right, their reflections breaking softly on the surface.
Warm ochre, peach and pale gold dominate the sky and are echoed in the water below, softened by a hazy, atmospheric mist that blurs the distant skyline. Brushwork is loose and blended in the sky, growing more textured in the foreground foliage, producing a tranquil, glowing calm typical of a river at day's end.
