About this work
A thick, twisting tree branch curves low across the middle of the composition, reaching out over a calm, deep-green pool of water. Light-dappled leaves fill the upper half of the picture, while pale rocks and boulders line the near and far shores. Smooth pale stones form the foreground bank from which the view is taken.
Sunlight filters through the canopy in patches of yellow-green and white, set against darker shadowed foliage and the cool, mirror-like green of the water. Brushwork is loose and varied - broken dabs for the leaves, longer strokes for the twisting bark of the branch - built up with visible texture typical of plein-air oil sketching. The overall effect is tranquil and shaded, a quiet corner of still water under summer trees.
