About this work
A tall, rough-edged white and grey form stands upright at the center of the canvas, its silhouette suggesting a tree stump, rock, or the hunched back of an animal seen from behind. It rises from a scorched brown-black ground, surrounded by thin, looping red-orange lines that read like dry vines, roots or scrawled markings.
The surface combines charred-looking blacks and umbers with a warm ochre ground showing through in patches, while the red tendrils are drawn with a fine, calligraphic line quite different from the broader scraped strokes of the central form. Muted and largely tonal, the picture has a quiet, weathered feel rather than the violence of brighter works in the series.
