About this work
A row of reversed numerals is scratched across the upper third of an otherwise deep charcoal-black sheet, with cursive, handwriting-like marks etched along both margins. Left of center a pale vertical rectangle glows like a window, with a smaller lit square set just below it, surrounded by fine hatched scratches.
The palette stays close to monochrome black and grey, with silvery highlights where scratching cuts through to the paper beneath. The rough, grainy ground and incised lines give the sheet a faded, photographic-negative quality, and the single glowing rectangle holds the eye in an otherwise dark, enigmatic surface.
