About this work
An irregular, flame- or wing-like red shape spreads across the upper portion of the composition, its edges fraying into thin drips and splashes. Below it a fine mesh of black crosshatched lines covers a pale ground, interrupted by a solid dark blue-black horizontal band roughly at center, suggesting a strip of shadow or water beneath a lighter expanse.
Bold red pigment contrasts sharply against the muted grey-white ground and the tight linear crosshatching, which is applied in a dry, scratchy hand across the lower two-thirds of the sheet. The interplay of loose, bled color at the top and controlled, repetitive line work below creates a tense, dramatic division within the print's flat picture plane.
