About this work
A single-domed church with ochre-yellow walls and a green cupola occupies the left of the composition, its pitched roof dusted with snow. Bare, dark tree trunks cluster to its right, and an open expanse of trampled snow with faint bluish tracks fills the foreground beneath a pale grey sky.
Soft, dry strokes of white, grey and pale ochre blur architecture and sky together, muting contrast and suggesting drifting, wind-blown snow. The restrained, near-monochrome palette and diffused light create a hushed, wintry stillness bordering on melancholy.
