About this work
A tree-lined embankment runs along a frozen canal toward a row of classical buildings with columned facades under a heavy grey sky. Bare, thickly textured trees frame the path on both sides, their trunks rising against a canal edged with stone parapets dusted and streaked with melting snow, while a few small figures and vehicles are suggested in the middle distance.
Thick, encrusted strokes of grey, ochre and dull gold build the slushy pavement and snow-laced branches, with warmer touches picking out lit windows along the far facades. The muted, overcast palette and coarse, heavily worked surface give the scene a damp, chilly stillness typical of a late-winter thaw.
