About this work
A wide river choked with snow and ice fills the lower half of the canvas, its pale surface broken by a dark open channel running toward the horizon. Low embankment buildings, rooftops and a single church spire sit in a thin band along the far shore beneath an overcast sky.
Soft greys, mauves and muted blues dominate the palette, applied in smooth, blended strokes that mute contrast and detail into the distance. The heavy, low clouds and flattened light give the scene a hushed, subdued winter stillness.
