About this work
A winding, deeply rutted road curves from the foreground into a broad open field covered in patchy snow tinted pink and mauve by low light. Large rounded mounds, either snow-covered haystacks or a rock outcrop, rise on the left, with a line of dark trees and low structures along the horizon under a wide ochre sky.
Thick impasto strokes in warm browns, mauve and gold render the snow catching late light, while the sky is painted in a flat wash of golden-brown suggesting either dawn or dusk. The rutted tracks of the road form strong diagonal lines pulling the eye into the distance, giving the scene a quiet, wintry stillness.
