About this work

A vast bank of turbulent grey clouds fills roughly four-fifths of the canvas, its billowing forms building toward a lighter break near the horizon. Below, a low, dark tree line separates the sky from a strip of green and teal marshland, across which several small birds are scattered in flight.

The palette is restricted to greys, whites and muted greens, with the sky built up in broad, loaded strokes that leave visible ridges of paint, while the grassland is rendered in thinner, more controlled marks. The composition's low horizon and heavy atmosphere give the scene a damp, brooding, somber mood.
