About this work

A cluster of bare birches and evergreens rises from a snow-covered bank, their thin trunks and tangled twigs silhouetted against a warm, hazy backdrop. Thick drifts of snow mound in the foreground, and patches of underbrush show through in ochre and rust, suggesting a dense stand of trees caught in low winter light.

Built up with dense, ridged impasto, the surface mixes gold, cream and pale grey, the ridges of paint catching light like snow crystals. Dark accents of green and rust punctuate the trunks and undergrowth, and the overall warmth gives the grove a soft, glowing, almost enchanted stillness.
