About this work
A tall corner house with a cupola-topped tower dominates the composition, its facade dotted with lit and dark windows. The street recedes in a long perspective to the left, lined with snow-covered ledges and shopfronts; small dark figures cross the slushy pavement and overhead wires cut across the sky.
Thick, broken strokes of grey, ochre and dusty pink build the walls and snow, while the sky is painted in soft mauve and salmon tones of dusk. Details dissolve into loose daubs of colour, and reflected light on wet pavement gives the scene a soft, glowing evening mood.
