About this work
A row of tall waterside buildings and a low stone bridge line a canal beneath a soft dawn sky streaked with mauve clouds and a pale crescent moon. Seagulls wheel above the water and rooftops in loose scattered flight. Pale reflections break across the canal's surface in front of the darkened facades, whose scattered lit windows still glow against the graying night.
The palette shifts from warm peach and rose in the sky to cool slate-blue in the silhouetted buildings and water, capturing the transitional light of early morning. Dabbed, textured brushwork animates the clouds and water's surface, while the architecture is kept in flatter, darker masses. The soft light and circling birds give the canal a calm, awakening stillness.
