About this work
A dense island of trees and shrubs, rendered in near-silhouette, occupies the center of the composition, framed by calmer stretches of water on either side. Their dark forms and those of smaller trees along the horizon are mirrored in the still surface of a river or pond that fills the foreground.
The sky is built from loose, textured strokes of ochre and pale yellow that brighten toward the horizon, while the trees are painted in deep greens and near-black shadow. The contrast between the glowing sky and the dark foliage creates a hushed, glowing dusk atmosphere.
