About this work
Thick stands of trees rise along the left and right banks of a narrow waterway, their heavy dark foliage nearly meeting at the center and opening onto a paler strip of sky and distant shore beyond. The still water in the foreground carries faint, softened reflections of the trees and a greenish tint from the sky, with dark grassy ground closing the very front of the composition.
The palette is built from deep green-black masses of foliage set against a pale, glowing blue-green sky, the light diffuse and directionless in the way typical of a long summer twilight. Brushwork is soft and blended in the sky and water, denser and more textured in the trees, and the overall tonal restraint gives the scene a hushed, luminous quiet.
